Extreme skating and biking action gets visitors revved up for 2023 Ballito Pro Festival

The epic sporting action isn’t limited to KwaDukuza’s surf for the 2023 Ballito Pro Presented by O’Neill – visitors can expect top-level trials biking demonstrations and skateboarding action as part of the Festival events. Things get started with the Ballito Pro Skate Jam at the Ballito Bowl on Saturday, 1 July from 12pm, with Brent Le Riche returning to perform his world-class moves as part of the Monster Energy Programme from 7 to 9 July.

Organisers of The Ballito Pro Skate Jam, Old School Productions, are excited to announce an impressive line-up of pro skaters and top-level brand activations at the third instalment. While previous titles have been dominated by local competitors, an influx of South Africa’s top talent is set to elevate the contest significantly.

“We are stoked to be hosting an even bigger edition of the Ballito Pro Skate Jam which we know is going to create even more traction on the skate calendar,” commented Markus Müseler, Old School Productions event’s organiser. “The 2023 edition also sees Hot Wheels launching its new skate line. It’s incredible how brands are pushing investment into the skate scene!”

Among those signed up to compete for the R20 000 prize is world-class skater Damian Bramley, a Northern Cape product – now Cape Town resident – and a 2024 Olympian hopeful. He’ll be joined on the bowl by Thalente Biyela, a Durban Beach Park original who is now making a name for himself in the Mother City. His epic story from the streets to professional skateboarder was captured in the award-winning documentary, I am Thalente, featuring Tony Hawk and co-produced by Salema Masekela.

Audiences will also get to witness the talent of Khule ‘the coolest kid in Durban’ Ngubane, alongside 2021 winner Kalvyn Mac Millan, 2022 defending champion Jamie De Villiers, and defending U16 champion, Ezra Vosloo. The Ballito Pro Skate Jam will be a full-on festival, loaded with food trucks, music, product giveaways, and the popular Monster Energy Truck.

From 7 to 9 July, Ballito Pro Festival-goers can look out for The Monster Energy Truck bringing a great vibe and energy to the beachfront. Forming part of the Monster Energy Programme is South Africa’s legendary Brent Le Riche who will perform unmissable tricks on his demo rig set up near the retail area at Willard Beach. As one of South Africa’s most decorated trial riders, Le Riche has a wealth of experience in the saddle and knows how to entertain a crowd.

Clean, Green, Blue Flag, Ballito Embodies Ballito Pro’s ‘Konke Kuluhlala’ Motto

Clean, Green, Blue Flag, Ballito Embodies Ballito Pro’s ‘Konke Kuluhlala’ Motto

The Ballito Urban Improvement Precinct (BUIP) knows that sustained water quality is a major priority for the local community and holidaymakers which is why, working as a collective with local residential estates, it has ensured consistent and independent sea water testing since the April 2022 floods which caused major havoc and pollution to KZN’s coastline.

Demonstrating rigorous transparency, the results of this weekly testing are shared weekly via the BUIP’s email and social media channels. From 4 January 2023 to 30 May 2023 samples taken from beaches and tidal pools from Salmon Bay through to Tiffany’s Beach showed that E. coli levels were consistently in the ‘green for ideal’ or ‘amber for acceptable’ range barring one week (9 May) where the count was at a critical level at Willard’s Beach. Bearing in mind that water quality is affected by high winds and seas, this occurrence was short lived and Willard’s, also a Blue Flag beach, will continue to host the annual Ballito PRO reinforcing its status a world class natural attraction.

BUIP precinct manager Thierry Leclezio says, “With Blue Flag status and a world class promenade, we certainly are very fortunate to have this wonderful facility on our doorstep that continues to draw crowds, provide a wonderful natural escape for locals and visitors and host world-class events.”

And while the north coast’s beaches continue to receive much deserved attention, the promenade itself is due for a minor upgrade in the form of a new access ramp. To further raise Ballito’s status as a caring and cared for environment, the BUIP in collaboration with KDM is actively raising funds to build a fourth access ramp down to the beach. Based on previous projects, the new ramp will cost R40 000 to build and the UIP is calling on the community to get behind this worthwhile UIP Non-Profit Company driven project. For more information on the project visit www.ballitouip/projects.co.za or donate directly via the zapper code.

“Collaboration amongst all community role-players and the public at large is key to further enhancing the KZN North Coast’s public spaces and delivering on our objective of being positioning as Africa’s most sought-after warm water lifestyle destination. It is also for this reason that we attract world-class events to our shores like the Ballito PRO. Together we can do it,” concludes Leclezio.

Ballito Pro presented by O'Neill Announces ‘Everything Is Blue’ Theme To Celebrate Oceans and Sustainability

The Ballito Pro presented by O’Neill announced the theme of Konke KuLuhlaza, isiZulu for ‘Everything Is Blue’ at a media and partners breakfast this morning. Bringing the best in entertainment, retail, and beachside fun, this year’s festival programme from 27 June to 9 July will be centered on sustainability, inclusivity, and growth.

Now in its 54th edition, the Ballito Pro is the world’s longest running professional surfing event and Stop No.3 on the World Surf League (WSL) Challenger Series (CS) for men and women.

At the end of the 2023 season, the Top 10 men and Top 5 women on the Challenger Series rankings will qualify for the 2024 Championship Tour (CT). Out of the six Challenger Series competitions, only the top four results will count toward their end-of-year rankings.

South Africa’s top contenders, former Ballito Pro winner Adin Masencampand local favourite Luke Thompson will line up against the likes of Imaikalani DeVault (HAW), Samuel Pupo (BRA), Cole Houshmand (USA) and Jett Schilling (USA) who are currently leading the rankings after the first two events in Australia.

The women’s draw is stacked with the Top 10 Challenger Series contenders like India Robinson (AUS), Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), Isabella Nichols (AUS), Sawyer Lindblad (USA) and Alyssa Spencer (USA). South Africa’s Sarah Baum is right there in the mix, just two spots down from the CT qualification line and will be raring to go at her home break. Joining Baum is CS competitors Natasha van Greunen, Jessie van Niekerk.

“Locals, surf fans and competitors will witness incredible surfing from international and local surfers who will be battling it out for valuable WSL Challenger Series points,” said WSL Africa Regional Director Tasha Mentasti. “KwaDukuza Municipality and all its stakeholders can be very proud of the positive impact they have had within the area for local communities and businesses, as well as for the sport of surfing within South Africa and for the international athletes that compete in the event.”

The Ballito Pro presented by O’Neill Festival Organiser Collette Bundy said the campaign is about forging impactful collaborations and using this global event to promote sustainable initiatives while celebrating our oceans and culture. “Taking inspiration from the local Zulu word ‘luhlaza’ which means blue, we’re celebrating the ocean, KwaDukuza’s ongoing Blue Flag Beach programme, and our sponsor, O’Neill’s Blue global product collection. It is fortuitous that ‘luhlaza’ also translates to ‘green’ because we’ll be weaving stories of sustainability into our ocean narrative with a great festival line-up planned for visitors,” said Bundy.

Ocean health is a priority for event hosts, KwaDukuza Municipality.
“We are proud to be hosting the Ballito Pro presented by O’Neill Festival at Willard Beach, one of three Blue Flag beaches in the area,” said KwaDukuza Municipal Mayor Lindile Nhaca. “Through the event, we will bring awareness about protecting our coastline’s environmental richness which is a key tourism asset and economic driver for the region.”

“No matter how remote we feel we are from the oceans, every act each one of us takes in our everyday lives affects our planet’s water cycle and in return affects us.”
– Fabian Cousteau, Marine Explorer and Documentary Filmmaker

The globe’s longest-running surfing contest is returning to KwaDukuza and with it, 2023 Ballito Pro Presented by O’Neill Festival! Bringing the best in entertainment, retail, and beachside fun, this year’s festival programme from 27 June to 9 July will be centred on sustainability, inclusivity, and growth, with the theme announced as Konke KuLuhlaza – Zulu for Everything is Blue.

“This year’s Ballito Pro Presented by O’Neill Festival campaign is about forging impactful collaborations and using this global event to promote sustainable initiatives while celebrating our oceans and culture,” explained Collette Bundy, The Ballito Pro Presented by O’Neill Festival Organiser. “Taking inspiration from the local Zulu word ‘luhlaza’ which means blue, we’re celebrating the ocean, KwaDukuza’s ongoing Blue Flag Beach programme, and our sponsor, O’Neill’s Blue global product collection. It is fortuitous that ‘luhlaza’ also translates to ‘green’ because we’ll be weaving stories of sustainability into our ocean narrative with a great festival line-up planned for visitors.”

KwaDukuza’s Blue Flag Beach Programme

Ocean health is a priority for event hosts, KwaDukuza Municipality. They have adopted Coastal Development & Economic Tourism Strategies, including the KwaDukuza Coastal Management Plan, which ensures best practices, environmental education, sustainability, and beach safety through strategic plans for growth and economic sustainability.

“We recently launched our Blue Flag Beach programme which will support our iconic tourism status as a key beach destination,” explained KwaDukuza Municipal Mayor Lindile Nhaca. “This is an international standard in terms of best practices, environmental education, sustainability and beach safety. We are proud to be hosting the Ballito Pro Presented by O’Neill Festival at Willard Beach, one of three Blue Flag beaches in the area. Through the event, we will bring awareness about protecting our coastline’s environmental richness which is a key tourism asset and economic driver for the region.”

The Ballito Pro’s sustainability goals are also being achieved through public-private partnerships such as between KwaDukuza Municipality and the Ballito Urban Improvement Precinct (BUIP). In addition to existing BUIP programmes that support the safety and maintenance of public areas, BUIP continues to work towards growing its operational footprint during the Ballito Pro to include sustainable undertakings including water testing and coastal upgrades.

O’Neill Blue’s sustainable product collection

Event sponsor, O’Neill, has a longstanding commitment to the well-being of the ocean through founder, Jack O’Neill’s Sea Odyssey, and Ocean Mission programmes. The iconic surf lifestyle brand is growing its sustainability percentage through the O’Neill Blue global product collection.

“We are extremely proud to be partnering with KwaDukuza on the Ballito Pro again and are very excited about this year’s campaign,” commented Paul Canning, O’Neill Brand Director. “It’s about highlighting the importance of sustainability to minimise the impact on our planet and playgrounds through ocean initiatives, supply chains, and sustainable products. As Jack O’Neill said: ‘The ocean is alive and we’ve got to take care of it.’”

For the Ballito Pro Presented by O’Neill Challenger event, the event merchandise – O’Neill Blue – will be manufactured from recycled cotton and polyester, as well as using a recycling process called Repreve, where used plastic bottles from the oceans and landfills are converted into durable fibres to manufacture boardshorts. Throughout the festival, sustainable steps will be taken such as the removal of single-use plastics, recycled polybags, and recycled material hangtags.

NPO support and activations

O’Neill also supports global NPOs who align with the O’Neill Blue Ocean Mission including The Surfrider Foundation, Mauli Ola Foundation, Ocean Works, and Surfers Not Street Children.

There will also be a number of eco-focused campaigns and activations happening throughout, such as the Litter4Tokens awareness campaign and activation, with prizes worth R10 000 up for grabs! The Litterboom Project is also hosting awareness campaigns, beach and river clean-ups, and a 5km Fun Run, with the We are iLembe e-waste campaign dedicated to educating the public about the dangers of electronic waste.

Top musos kept the crowd rocking at The Ballito Pro Free Music Concerts

The stage was set for some of the country’s biggest names in music when The Ballito Pro Free Music Concerts got underway at Salmon Bay from 7 to 8 July. Forming part of the extensive Ballito Pro presented by O’Neill festival programme, organisers arranged a stellar line-up to keep the audiences entertained.

“It was great being able to host The Ballito Pro Free Music Concerts which is a popular festival addition every year,” said Collette Bundy, Festival Event Organiser. “The two-night event included a really talented selection of South African singers, DJs and bands, and it was great to be able to celebrate our local talent in person once again.”

The Ballito Pro Free Music Concerts Night 1

The first night of The Ballito Pro Free Music Concerts welcomed South Africa’s favourite Afro-pop siblings – Q Twins. Having made their name when they featured on Idols South Africa, Virginia and Viggy Qwabe from northern KZN have earned their place in South Africa’s music circle. They were joined renowned DJ, record producer and Kwaito star, DJ Tira who has been rocking the local scene for more than two decades.

Another highlight for the night was a new name on the block – the winner of this year’s Ekasi Experience Battle of the DJs. Forming part of The Ballito Pro’s After Dark programme, the Battle of the DJs saw the top 10 DJs fighting it out at Gidela Lounge in Nshaweni. The top contender, DJ Blackzin, took a spot on the Main Stage of The Ballito Pro Free Music Concerts.

The Ballito Pro Free Music Concerts Night 2

Things got even louder on the Friday night when Durban-based pop rock band, The Black Lapels, took to the stage. They were joined by The Voice, South Africa’s finalist, Freddy L – a popular singer and front man for the band, The Subway Run. Bringing high energy to the Main Stage was Kyle Cassim, known for his deep, soulful house and electronic dance music.

Proudly South Africa singer, Majozi, then blasted the beats. SAMA-nominated for his album, Fire, his heartfelt music communicates an uplifting perspective which has seen him play on the international stage and with local greats.

Then it was time for the unmistakable sound of Desmond & The Tutus who kept the crowd amped as they effortlessly blend rock n roll, indie, kwela and pop with a dash of truly South African flavour. The band’s drummer, Craig Durrant, also got the chance to showcase his specific indie/rock flair when he took to the stage as Yo Grapes.

The festival programme runs alongside the world’s longest running professional surfing event which is welcoming the return of international surfing with the O’Neill SMTH Shapes Ballito Pro Junior, World Surf League (WSL) Ballito Pro Presented by O’Neill Trials and Ballito Pro Presented by O’Neill Challenger Series (CS) for men and women.

The return of the winter Ballito Pro festival a massive boost for local tourism

It was a holiday to remember as The Ballito Pro presented by O’Neill returned to KwaDukuza’s shores during the winter months, bringing with it a well-supported festival programme of music, retail, extreme sports and beachside action. Running from 29 June to 10 July, visitors to the world’s longest running professional surfing event were treated to a host of festival entertainment, from seaside games in the day through to After Dark parties later in the day.

“We’d like to thank KwaDukuza and our event sponsors for supporting The Ballito Pro and ensuring the 2022 edition was incredibly worthwhile for all locals and visitors,” commented Collette Bundy, The Ballito Pro Festival Organiser. “It’s no secret that the past few years have been incredibly tough for the local economy, particularly our tourist-friendly seaside spots, and this year’s Ballito Pro brought some much-needed support for local businesses while providing holidaymakers with endless activities and fun. We’re looking forward to continuing this tradition and growing the event in 2023.”

Following the success of the inaugural Ballito Pro Skate Jam presented by Volcom, Fallen & Groundswell Skate & Surf in December 2021, The Ballito Pro welcomed the best local skater groms and pros to The Ballito Bowl on Friday, 1 July. Durban North’s Jamie de Villiers who took home the R7 500 cash prize in the Open Division, while local skaters Ezra Vosloo and Jessica Louw took first place in the Groms (U16) Division for boys and girls respectively. This was followed by the relaunch party on 3 July of the iconic Groundswell Surf & Skate which celebrated 25 years in business.

Music lovers were in for a treat as The Ballito Pro Free Music Concerts returned on 7 and 8 July boasting a great line-up. Some of the big names that took to the stage included Q Twins, DJ Tira, Majozi, Desmond and the Tutus and Yo Grapes. The winner of the Ekasi Experience Battle of the DJs also got the limelight with a spot on the concert lineup.

Good Vibes, which ran from 5 to 9 July at Good Vibes Café and Bar also provided ongoing entertainment with the likes Syzo, Funky G, Brent Crud, Chunda Munki and Kyle Cassim on the decks. Ballito Village Vibes also kept visitors entertained with music by The Tequila Twins, Rene Tshiakanyi and Spare Parts – with the Ilembe Surf Riders Fundraiser taking place on 6 July. And if this wasn’t enough from the After Dark programme, Conchilla Tapas Lounge & Bar featured DJs every night with great prizes and giveaways.

During the daylight hours, alongside the surfing action, Willard Beach was the place to be! This spot played host to ongoing Beach Action in the form of morning pilates and yoga, Jive with Jen, fashion shows, and competitive beach sports. The Kids’ Corner kept the little ones occupied with face painting, water balls, sandcastle building and a Kiddies Beach Dash. There was also great shopping – including the Oakley Pop Up, Surfboard displays and Shaping Pop Ups – as well as a food and cider garden at Retail Delight.

Ocean conservation is at the heart of The Ballito Pro with environmental and sustainability awareness programmes forming part of the Beach Action programme. The National Nurdle Clean-up Competition, organised by Litter4Tokens, got people collecting microplastic nurdles (known as mermaid’s tears) to prevent them entering the marine ecosystem. Breathe Conservation hosted an exciting snorkel day and guided walk on 3 July, with visitors encouraged to share their sustainability stories on social media using the tag @wsl for the #WeAreOneOcean campaign.

Sustainable initiatives at the 2022 Ballito Pro festival set to the change the tide on pollution

Sustainable initiatives at the 2022 Ballito Pro festival set to the change the tide on pollution

The health of the ocean is a primary focus for organisers, competitors and visitors of The Ballito Pro presented by O’Neill which is why a number of conservation-focused projects have been announced for this year’s festival line-up. In KwaDukuza from 29 June to 10 July, festival-goers will be able to do their part for the ocean while also standing the chance to win big!

“Ocean conservation has always played a major role in the Ballito Pro and the need for collective action has never been more evident than now following the devastating KZN floods,” said Collette Bundy, The Ballito Pro Festival Organiser. “We have some fantastic non-profit organisations on board for this year’s festival programme. They’ll be engaging with visitors in person and on social media platforms, demonstrating the work being done and innovative ways that visitors can play their part.”

The National Nurdle Clean-up Competition, organised by Litter4Tokens, will be running throughout the festival. This innovative project shines a light on the danger of plastic nurdles – also known as mermaid’s tears – which are lentil-sized plastic pellets used to create plastic products. Unfortunately, billions of these microplastics being shipped end up in the ocean, which is hugely detrimental to marine ecosystems and humans.

To tackle this pollution, Clare Swithenbank-Bowman from Litter4Tokens developed the Mermaid Tear Catcher (MTC) from ocean-bound plastic. The MTC is a scooping device with holes specifically demarcated so the user can actually sieve the nurdles out of the dry sea or river sand. Visitors to the Ballito Pro can now help with this worthwhile cause – and stand a chance to win big prizes – by entering the competition.

Step 1: Get a Mermaid Tear Catcher at The Ballito Pro or www.litter4tokens.co.za.

Step 2: Start sieving the dry sand near rivers and seas, particularly by the high-water marks.

Step 3: Take a photo of the nurdle find and load it with the unique code on the MTC to www.litter4tokens.co.za.

Step 4: Drop the nurdles in the drums located at lifesaving points, The Ballito Pro and Ballito Surf Co.

Lending support to the competition is Grant ‘Twiggy’ Baker, legendary South African big wave surfer and three-time WSL World Champion. He commented: “Nurdle pollution is a huge problem. Almost every beach I travel to around the world has these environmentally disastrous pieces of plastic on them. The work that Litter4Tokens is doing to try and help clean these things up is fantastic. Please help support them.”

Through the World Surf League’s (WSL), NPO partner, WSL PURE, a coalition of more than 90 NPOs have united to create ocean conservation awareness through the We Are One Ocean campaign, which is running at The Ballito Pro. Everyone is playing a part in protecting the world’s oceans and the We Are One Ocean campaign aims to bring these stories together and identify areas for collaboration. Visitors to this year’s Ballito Pro can get involved by sharing their sustainability story on social media using the tag @wsl and #WeAreOneOcean.

Breathe Conservation, a global NPO dedicated to solving the problem of plastic pollution by inspiring change, will also participate in The Ballito Pro’s festival programme through informative environmental awareness campaigns. The organisation was founded by Sarah Furguson, a renowned Channel swimmer, world record holder, and physiotherapist who is committed to promoting ocean health. On Sunday, 3 July, visitors can participate in Breathe Conservation’s Snorkel Day and Guided Walk – meeting at 7.15am at Willard Beach -to get insight and first-hand experience of the marine life, tides and more. Bookings are essential. To book or for more information, contact Elzanne on 073 821 0426.

Competitors set to get extreme in The Ballito Pro Skate Jam this Friday

Groms and pros are heading to the Ballito Bowl on Friday, 1 July to compete in the epic Ballito Pro Skate Jam presented by Volcom, Fallen & Groundswell Skate & Surf. This captivating event forms part of The Ballito Pro festival programme, which is running alongside the surfing contest, taking place at KwaDukuza from 29 June to 10 July.

“We’re really stoked to be holding The Ballito Pro Skate Jam again this year – it was a huge hit when we hosted it for the first time in December 2021 and we really feel it’s going to be a set fixture of The Ballito Pro, growing massively in the years to come,” said Paul Canning, event organiser. “It’s a big drawcard and a real hit among the local kids who skate the Ballito Bowl. They really put everything on the line in that U16 division. In the pro division, we’re expecting some of South Africa’s top skaters to make an appearance, which is great inspiration for the groms, and great viewing for spectators.”

This year’s contest has some fantastic prizes up for grabs, with both boys’ and girls’ divisions in the Groms (U16) and Open Division. Each winner of the Groms Division will win a Volcom hamper worth R2 500; with 2nd place contestants earning a Volcom hamper valued at R2 000, and 3rd place taking home a Volcom hamper valued at R1 500. Groundswell Skate & Surf has also sponsored a R2 500 hamper for the Best Trick in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions.

The winner of the Open Division wins a cash prize of R7 500, with the Best Trick taking R2 500 in cash – all sponsored by Volcom. Fallen Footwear is also sweetening the deal with two additional awards; the Bravery Award and the Best Local Ripper Award, each taking home a R1 500 Fallen Footwear hamper.

“I’d like to extend our thanks to Monster for partnering with us again this year, as well as our partners, Volcom, Fallen Footwear and Groundswell Skate & Surf for the incredible prizes. Skaters are super amped for what is set to be a great night of action!”
